Today – December 7th – is International Civil Aviation Day! From the UN: “The purpose of International Civil Aviation Day is to help generate and reinforce worldwide awareness of the importance of international civil aviation to the social and economic development of States, and of the unique role of ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) in helping States to cooperate and realize a truly global rapid transit network at the service of all mankind.”

Mano a Mano’s Aviation Program

Mano a Mano’s aviation program brings healthcare into sparsely populated remote communities whose location is hours or days away by land or river from the nearest health services. Since 2005, we have served these communities through:

  1. “Pop up” weekend clinics (or five-day events, when possible) for which we transport volunteer health care professionals to provide primary medical & dental care, health education, and referrals to specialists, if needed;
  2. Emergency rescue of ill and injured individuals, transporting them to urban hospitals for life-saving treatment;
  3. Transport of in-demand cargo: medical supplies, mobility equipment, food, and other items.
Residents of Asunta met the aircraft to greet the teachers when they arrived. (September 2023)

In the first half of 2023, our aviation program provided 21 emergency flights (4,564 since the aviation program began), hosted 22 weekend health clinics (504 total), and transported 289,520 pounds of cargo to isolated Bolivian communities.
