Mano a Mano’s aviation program flies volunteer medical professionals into remote regions of Bolivia where dental services and health care delivered by physicians are rarely available (this is one recent example from May).
Dental services are requested by each community that we serve through the weekend clinic program. Volunteer dentists play an integral role in preparing for and participating in these events. They have been using the sterilizers recently sent in a shipment from Minnesota – equipment that is essential for the safe delivery of dental services – almost every weekend.
The director of our aviation program tells us that they are sterilizing 250 dental instruments to carry with them in the aircraft for each weekend clinic. This number is sufficient to ensure that 4 volunteer dentists will be able to examine and treat at least 50 patients. They hope to expand this program in the future to include more dentists and serve this high-priority need in these remote communities.
Our staff and volunteers in Bolivia are extremely grateful for these sterilizers – one example among the thousands of items Mano a Mano sends each year.
